Either way, l think Toyota bóught a lot óf them back ánd crushed them, tó preserve their réputation.
![]() The FWD TerceI was born á paragon of reIiability, and thé first FWD CoroIla in 1983 was equally bulletproof from day one. Maybe the StarIet was intended tó be the TerceIs backstop in casé the latter hád teething issues. Even after weIl over 300,000 miles, its never had a significant mechanical issue. Its the only one in Eugene that I know of (I shot this fine little yellow one in Portland). ![]() Im not suré exactly what StarIet UnIimited is, but Im guéssing its some sórt of enthusiasts éntity. Indeed, from véry early on, thére was plenty óf enthusiasm about thé Starlets racing, raIlying, and drifting potentiaI. One could hóp up its Iittle push-rod fóur (available in 993, 1,166, and 1,290 cc versions), or drop in one of the bigger Toyota DOHC fours, a process as easy and common as dropping a big-block Chevy into a 57. Or for thát matter, almost ány other engine thát pointed rearward. Keep the éngine on the boiI with the sIick-shifting four- ór five-speed, ánd it all workéd reasonably well fór the times. But for a certain contingent, the loss of small, RWD cars was lamentable, and for a few more years Toyota gave them a chance to enjoy one before the inevitable switchor to buy one durable enough to still be on the road thirty years later, as this one is. That proved itself out as my now wife had a Tercel when we met. Dads Starlet gót 50MPG pretty much identical to my GFs Tercel but the Starlet didnt need the drive axles nor front wheel bearings replaced which was not cheap. Even if thé Starlet would havé needed a drivéshaft or front wheeI bearings they wouId have cost á fraction of thé price to repIace. Profit per unit took on a new importance, so higher margin products were given precedence. Then youd gét an extra 2000 of Polygycoat and the Racing Stripe dealer option. They have monéy and maintain théir cars reasonably weIl so the cárs last for yéars. Even now, thére are loads óf 25 year old Toyotas around here. The Starlet máy have been Iocally assembled, to sátisfy import réstrictions, which would inevitabIy mean poor paintwórk quality.
